5 Ways to Reset for the New Year

5 Ways to Reset for the New Year

I always see the new year as a chance to purge all the excess from the year before. I go through all of my clothing, accessories, pantry...all the stuff that is expired or tired gets donated, mended or composted (the pantry stuff, I mean!).

As winter continues on, we all naturally turn inward to our homes as a sanctuary. Here in Portland, winters are rainy, overcast and an overall shade of gray. The darkness and cold can take a toll on my mood so I try to always keep my home a space that feels cozy and warm. Here are a few of my tried-and-true tips for making your home an oasis in the new year:

  1. Comfort takes priority: I have a personal rule of no outside clothes worn at home, and ESPECIALLY not in my bed. All my indoor clothing is stretchy, knit and comfortable. Soft fabrics, linen bedding and zero zippers or buttons.
  2. Bring the light in: The warm glow of candles is soothing to look at and elevates the atmosphere of the indoors. As a candlemaker, I often forget to light my own candles but this year I'm trying to burn through as many as I can. Our Beeswax Tapers add a romantic feeling as they burn down. I often light a container candle for a scented experience. Right now my fave scents are Sanctuary, Night Fever and any one of the Incense Matches that provide an instant, cleansing smoke.
  3. Moisture is key: Winter skin is dry, dull and cold. I love to warm up my bod with a Dry Brush routine. Dry brushing exfoliates skin and encourages better circulation. It warms me up before I get into a piping hot shower. Post-shower, I love using our Body Oils to moisturize my skin. Our proprietary blend of Jojoba, Kukui Nut and Macadamia Nut oils strengthen and nourish skin for a velvety, cocooned feel.
  4. Get outside: The weather outside is frightful, but getting outside during these months is so essential in feeling connected. Fresh, cold air and the changing seasons can be a nice way to reset your mind and body. Last winter I walked during icy mornings and noticing the sights and sounds was so rejuvenating. Winter doesn't have to be gloom and doom, it can be really beautiful too.
  5. Try something new: this time of year gets me really excited to learn a new craft or skill while I have a bit more free time before the craziness of candle season. This year im starting an adult ballet class, taking a weaving class and learning to mend my own clothing. We are now excited to offer Fragrance Workshops at our Portland studio for parties of up to 4 guests. I love to show folks the magic that scent can have on our every day. If you are in or visiting Portland, come and have a great experience with us and leave with your own custom scent!
I hope you try to create a safe space for yourself at home with my tips to ease into the new year!
